Sprained Thumb Taping Techniques Explained

Updated: Nov 26

In these two videos we provide two slightly different thumb taping techniques that can be used to support your thumb when returning from injury or to assist with the injury prevention process.

Thumb Taping Techniques

Taping helps stabilise your thumb, preventing further injury. Two common techniques include taping in isolation (self-taping) and thumb taping with additional wrist support. These methods are especially useful when returning to sports like basketball or football, where thumb protection is key during recovery.

This is an ideal technique for those returning to contact or ball sports. Sports which utilise these particular strapping technique may include volleyball, basketball, Australian rules football and soccer goalkeepers.

Some common thumb injuries could include thumb dislocation, thumb fracture and ligament damage of the thumb (jammed thumb or sprained thumb).
